DARK RETREAT

AT YUTHOK LING ARCE, ITALY

Finding Inner Light in the Dark

A Vision by Dr. Nida Chenagtsang at Yuthok Ling, Italy

In today's world of constant stimulation and endless distractions, we often struggle with having the physical and mental space to go deeper into our spiritual development.

The Dark Retreat (Tibetan: མུན་མཚམས། mun tsham) is an advanced Dzogchen togal practice where one spends a set amount of time in complete darkness. This ancient Tibetan tradition is one of the most rare and profound methods for self-realization. This method was practiced by masters and yogis for generations, with instructions and teachings passed down through an unbroken lineage. By completely removing light, we awaken our own innate potential for self healing and inner clarity.

This unique tradition of the Dark Retreat is not often talked about nor undertaken due to its secrecy and lack of proper preparation, guidance, and facilities.

We invite you to support the development of a professional dark retreat cabin at Yuthok Ling, Dr. Nida Chenagtsang's retreat center in Arce, Italy.
Our vision is to build an optimal environment where practitioners can fully immerse in this transformative experience.

Join us this Saturday, May 17 for the launch of this project:

A Thoughtfully Designed Sacred Space

Designed by Sara Marzullo and built with sustainable materials, our deluxe two-room cabin features:

  • Complete darkness with climate control and proper air ventilation

  • Option for adjoining rooms allowing for silent companionship

  • Private ensuite bathrooms with indoor plumbing and showers

  • Traditional tatami platforms for meditation, yoga, and rest

  • Strategic Sache placement at the base of an elephant-shaped hill, embraced by natural altar stones

This project honors Dr. Nida's Dark Retreat guru, Yogi Karjid Koolo Rinpoche, who completed his first dark retreat at age 14, and transmitted Dzogchen and Dark Retreat teachings to Dr. Nida.

Your Contribution Makes This Possible

We are raising €38,000 to complete construction partnering with local Italian builders, artisans, and family-owned businesses. Your donation supports:

  • Sustainable chestnut wood construction

  • Complete interior and exterior systems

  • Professional finishing and appropriate furnishing

  • Creation of a space that will serve practitioners for generations

By supporting this project, you're supporting the continuation of this sacred tradition in an unbroken lineage with thoughtfulness and consideration of the environment and sustainability.
